Part 1 | Part 2

Produced by Geetha Arts and directed by Suresh Krishna, this 2001 release had an above average run at the box office, during which time it ran for 50 days in 97 centers and 100 days in 24 centers.
Despite the pretty good run for a sentimental family film, the timing of the release did have a negative impact. If it had been released after a super hit, instead of after a huge flop and an average Sri Manjunatha, it probably would have fared better. Fans had expected an action film instead of a family drama, in order to counter the super success of a rival’s film. Their disappointment in this regard did effect the talk.
Yet, with the negative talk, the film made profits, thus showing Chiru’s stamina. Rajkumaar, or Raj, (Chiru) is a rich audio company owner who owns a modern dance school. Dance is his passion and his life till he meets and marries Shanthi (Simran). They have a daughter Akshaya. Raj believes in his friends and does anything for them. However, they take advantage of him and usurp his wealth. Though Raj and his family are happy in their not-so-lavish lifestyle, their happiness is shattered when Akshaya becomes ill with a heart condition. Raj instead of bringing the money Shanthi had stored in the bank to the hospital to save Akshaya, uses it to save his former dance student who was hit by a car. Shanthi, who is pregnant, leaves him because she feels that he killed their daughter. Six years later, Raj, who is once again wealthy, sees his second child, Aishwarya, who looks exactly like his Akshaya, in whose honor he builds a foundation which takes care of poor, unhealthy children and their families. He builds a relationship with Aish without Shanthi’s knowledge. However, Shanthi finds out, tries to reconcile with him after relealizing her mistake, but doesn’t because she sees him with the same friend who took advantage of them earlier. Raj agrees to leave, says a final goodbye, and as he is about to leave, sees his child caught in an accidental fire at her school function. He saves her, but he is wounded. Shanthi sees how much he loves her and Aish and they finally reunite. Chiru plays a doting father, who spoils his first daughter rotten very well. However, his portrayal of a father, who is so overcome with the loss of his first child, but works to connect with his second child by pretending to be her friend is even better. He played this multi-layered character to perfection. It was a nice change for him. He showed that he is more than just a great star, but that he is a sensitive actor as well. One thing to note is that Chiru not only acted brilliantly, but he looked great. He was very slim and buff in this film. Simran acted well but at times looked tired in the film. Rajendra Prasad, as Chiru’s close friend, who always stands by him, does well. Kota Srinivasa Rao is delightful as Shanthi’s uncle who tries to reunite the family. Ashima Bhalla, the newcomer, is ok in her debut film as the girl who tries to reunite Raj and Shanthi. Baby Akshaya performs very well and has great chemistry with her on-screen dad. Suresh Krissna directed this tender story well. However, he does not accomodate for the holes in the plot. He does not show how Raj becomes wealthy again. If he had showed that in a small bit, it would have added some more vredibility to the story, but he left this part to the audience’s imagination.
Music by S.A.Rajkumaar is melodious, in particular for the songs, “Vana Vana” and “Aadu Aadinchu.” Choreography by Saroj Khan was good at points but overall, she did a horrible job. She did not fully utilize Chiru’s dancing skills and to make things worse she gave some of Chiru’s highlight steps to the ladies. She also repeated a lot of steps too often. Lawrence would have a better choice. Choreography by Raju Sundaram for “Vana Vana” was nice. Overall, Daddy is an entertaining film with an endearing performance by Megastar.
